Things to do Before & After You Move

Change of Address

  • US Postal Service
  • IRS
  • Driver's License
  • Social Security
  • Voter Registration
  • Banks/Investments/Charge Accounts
  • Insurance & Doctors
  • Friends & Family
  • Schools

1 Month Before Move

  • Reserve moving truck/movers
  • Get boxes, tape, & other moving necessities
  • Notify Utility Companies of the date for the final meter reading
  • Notify Cable Company, Security, & any other services you receive
  • Begin cleaning out closets, attic, & garage
  • Analyze what items can be thrown away/donated
  • Start packing infrequently used items

2 Weeks Before Move

  • Submit a postal change of address
  • Empty the fuel from your lawnmower, power tools, etc.
  • Create a room by room packing calendar to track your progress
  • Assemble a folder of important information about the home for the next home owner
  • Make sure all necessary repairs are complete
  • Plan meals to use up refrigerated food

1-5 Days Before the Move

  • Defrost your freezer & empty ice maker
  • Clean refrigerator, microwave, stove top & oven
  • Confirm travel/moving arrangements
  • Gather & clean outdoor furniture
  • Pack a suitcase for each family member with clothes & toiletries to get through the first 3 days
  • Use towels, t-shirts, pillows, & blanket around breakables
  • Back up all computers

Moving Day

  • Double check that all cabinets, closets, & dishwasher are empty
  • Give movers a tour & any specific instructions on what to move & what not to move
  • Dispose of trash
  • Final cleaning
  • Leave a note of your new address in the house so future can forward any remaining mail
  • Take a final walk through of the house to make sure no items are left behind
